Sleepy Stories

Sleepy Stories is an app and a blanket, designed to help premature babies and their mothers through their experience in the neonatal intensive care unit. The blanket has a pocket to fit a small speaker. This connects to the app and allows nurses to play the prerecorded voice of their mother to the baby. Scientific research has found that hearing familiar voices, particularly their mothers, is extremely beneficial for babies. It has been found to aid cognitive respiratory and heart development. The app has a calendar feature which allows parents to view when their stories have been played to their baby. Parents are also able to add photos and write small messages to create a ‘scrapbook’ of memories to look back on. The app also allows parents to keep track of more than one baby. Just under half of twin births and almost all triplet births, at least one baby has to go into special care for a while. There is a selection of well-known stories to choose from or parents can record whatever message they wish to be played to their baby.
